NYPD Offers $10,000 Reward in Targeted Shooting Death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
Midtown Manhattan was shaken Wednesday morning as UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in a brazen, targeted attack outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is now offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the gunman responsible for this tragic incident.
A Premeditated Attack
The shooting occurred at approximately 6:46 a.m. on 54th Street near Avenue of the Americas. Thompson, 50, had left his hotel across the street and was walking toward the Hilton’s 54th Street entrance, where a conference hosted by UnitedHealth Group was set to take place.
According to police, the gunman arrived at the scene five minutes before Thompson and lay in wait. As Thompson approached, the suspect shot him in the back and calf before circling around and firing multiple shots into his chest.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed this was a “premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.”
Thompson was found unconscious and unresponsive at the scene and was rushed to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Search for the Gunman
The shooter, described as wearing all-black clothing, a cream-colored jacket, a black face mask, and carrying a backpack, fled the scene on an e-bike, reportedly heading into Central Park. Authorities released a photo of the suspect holding the weapon outside the hotel and are utilizing helicopters, drones, and canine units in their extensive search.
Who Was Brian Thompson?
Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the insurance arm of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest health insurers in the United States. He had been with the company since 2004 and assumed the role of CEO in April 2021.
Under his leadership, UnitedHealthcare continued to grow as a major player in the healthcare industry, serving millions of customers nationwide.
Thompson was in New York City to attend the company’s investor meeting.
A City on Edge
The shooting unfolded in a bustling area of Manhattan, near iconic landmarks like Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Modern Art. The incident has left locals and tourists rattled, especially as it occurred hours before the highly anticipated Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony.
In response, the NYPD reassured the public that additional security measures have been implemented to ensure safety during the event.
Call for Information
As the investigation continues, the motive for the shooting remains unclear. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community assistance in apprehending the suspect.
The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for any tips that lead to an arrest in this case.
Conclusion
The tragic death of Brian Thompson has sent shockwaves through the business and local communities. A beloved leader and family man, Thompson’s untimely demise highlights the urgency of addressing violence and ensuring public safety.
If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the NYPD immediately. Your help could be crucial in bringing justice to this case.
