Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy Shamone Duncan, 50, was fatally shot while vacationing in Turks and Caicos on January 18, 2025. Duncan, a 21-year veteran of the Cook County Department of Corrections, was celebrating her sister’s birthday at a rooftop party at Aziza Restaurant & Lounge in Providenciales when an altercation downstairs escalated into gunfire. She was struck by a stray bullet during the incident.
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force reported that the shooting occurred around 10 p.m. near Grace Bay Road. Three individuals were shot: Duncan, who died at the scene; local resident Dario Stubbs, 30, who died at a hospital; and a 29-year-old man who is currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities stated there is no evidence suggesting that the victims were targeted.
Duncan’s family expressed profound grief over her sudden loss. Her son, Shamon Payton, shared, “I lost a lot of people… it just feels different with it being your mother, the person who birthed you.” The Cook County Sheriff’s Office also mourned her passing, stating, “Our hearts are broken for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan.”
The investigation is ongoing, with no arrests made at this time. The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is urging anyone with information to contact the Serious Crime Unit or Crime Stoppers.
