Community Honors 9 Year Old Samuel Rife After Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Green Ohio
Community Rallies in Memory of 9-Year-Old Samuel Rife Following Tragic Pedestrian Accident in Green, Ohio
A community-wide effort has been organized to honor the life and legacy of 9-year-old Samuel Rife, whose tragic death in a pedestrian accident has deeply impacted residents of Green and surrounding areas.
Samuel Rife, the son of Rev. J. Harlen Rife—pastor of the Greensburg United Methodist Church—and his wife, Madeline, lost his life on April 17 after being struck by a vehicle near his home on Peachwood Way.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, along with responders from the Green Fire Department, were dispatched at approximately 4:30 p.m. following reports that a child had been hit by a vehicle on the residential street. Preliminary findings indicate that a 2025 Jeep Wrangler was traveling along Peachwood Way when Samuel entered the roadway and was struck.
Emergency responders transported the child to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Authorities reported that the driver, an 81-year-old man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The incident remains under active review by the Summit Metro Crash Response Team. Officials have stated that, based on preliminary findings, neither excessive speed nor impairment appear to have been contributing factors. As of now, no charges have been filed.
In the wake of the tragedy, the community has come together to support the grieving family and to honor Samuel’s memory. Plans are underway for a vigil and additional remembrance events involving church members, school officials, and local residents.
A fundraising campaign has also been launched in Samuel’s name, with proceeds intended to support Family Support Specialists within Green City Schools. Organizers say the initiative reflects Samuel’s compassionate nature and his commitment to helping others.
“Sam was a passionate advocate for food security and regularly volunteered at local food distribution efforts in Akron and Canton,” organizers shared, highlighting the young boy’s dedication to serving his community.
As the investigation continues, Samuel Rife is being remembered not only as a beloved son, but also as a kind-hearted and community-minded child whose impact reached far beyond his years.
