Officials have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

According to the Power County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatch received initial reports at approximately 2:38 p.m. indicating that multiple individuals had been shot in the northern region of the county.

First responders arriving at the scene discovered two individuals deceased and a third suffering from gunshot wounds.

The injured individual was transported by ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center for emergency medical care.

As the situation developed, law enforcement personnel located a suspect concealed near the Portneuf River.

During this phase of the response, officers reported hearing additional gunfire.

Deputies attempted to engage the suspect in negotiations; however, the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly brandished a firearm and posed an immediate threat to responding officers.

Law enforcement personnel discharged their weapons in response, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot at the scene.

Authorities have reiterated that the area has been secured and there is no continuing risk to the community. Investigators remain on-site conducting a comprehensive examination of the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and with those currently receiving medical care,” said Sheriff Kasey Kendall. “We are deeply appreciative of the swift and coordinated efforts of our deputies and partner agencies in preventing further harm to the community.”

The Idaho Falls Police Department has been assigned to lead the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
