Amanda Sylvester, a promising African American athlete who tragically passed away after collapsing during volleyball practice

Tragic Loss of 15-Year-Old Athlete Sparks Outrage Over Ambulance Delay
The sports community in College Park, Georgia, is reeling from the devastating loss of 15-year-old Amanda Sylvester, a promising African American athlete who tragically passed away after collapsing during volleyball practice. The incident has raised serious concerns about emergency response protocols and the adequacy of ambulance services in critical situations.
The Incident
Amanda was warming up with her team, the Dream Chasers Volleyball Club, at the Tracey Wyatt Recreation Complex when she suddenly collapsed. Emergency responders from the College Park Fire Department arrived swiftly and tended to her while she was still conscious. However, despite repeated calls, an ambulance from Grady EMS was not dispatched in time.
After waiting over an hour, Amanda’s mother made the difficult decision to transport her to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in their van. Tragically, Amanda suffered cardiac arrest at the hospital. While doctors were able to revive her once, she later succumbed to her condition.
Community Outcry
Catherine Murray, director of the Dream Chasers Volleyball Club, voiced her frustration over the delayed ambulance response.
“We have precious lives in our hands, and we’re responsible for these precious lives,” Murray said. “We have to have a better network and system to protect these kids.”
City officials have launched an investigation into the delay, with College Park city manager Dr. Emmanuel Adediran expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy.
“We are all devastated by this tragic loss of life at such a young age,” Dr. Adediran said. “Our staff and first responders followed all protocols related to an injury or health care distress.”
Grady EMS explained that the initial call was categorized as “low acuity,” leading to the delay in dispatching an ambulance. By the time the call status was updated and a unit was en route, Amanda had already been transported to the hospital by her family.
Community Support for Amanda’s Family
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, the Dream Chasers Volleyball Club has started a GoFundMe campaign to support Amanda’s family. The fundraiser aims to cover funeral expenses, legal fees, and other costs associated with the tragedy. As of now, nearly $13,000 has been raised toward its $500,000 goal.
A Call for Change
This tragic loss has sparked a broader conversation about the need for more efficient emergency response systems, especially in youth sports environments. Amanda’s death serves as a somber reminder of the importance of swift and effective medical intervention.
The community is rallying together, not only to support Amanda’s family but also to push for systemic improvements that ensure no other family faces a similar tragedy.
